Well, nearly two years on. The 2010 elections draw near. Seems the Donkeys will lose the House. Probably hang on to their rather toothless majority in the Senate.

Frank Rich in the NY Times paints the picture of Obama’s failure of vision, values and practical experience.

Obama will appoint a Marine general as his national security advisor. James Jones. And says he will have to keep something like 20,000 to 50,000 troops in Iraq even after pulling out all “combat troops” after 16 months.

And meanwhile the current Sec’y of Defense (Gates) and Pentagon chairman (Mullen — who has been running our Pakistan foreign policy this year) will be staying on.

It would seem the Pentagon will be running Obama’s foreign policy — a continuation of Bush-Cheney in form and substance.

A fortiori: look for a lot more war next year, in Pakghanistan.

So it seems Hillary will be State, Richardson Commerce and Tim Geithner — current head of the NY Fed — at Treasury.

A year ago everybody thought Geithner was great. But I think concentrating all the power, now, in Fed heads — given their miserable slow and so far ineffective reactions — isn’t the best move.

They should have tried to get somebody like Bill Gross. Outside the current Rat Pack, insofar as possible.

Transition Blues: -- Obama warned of big terror strikes, perhaps before he takes office. Folds perhaps into the chat linked in prior comment -- re preparation for large-scale war in pakistan. -- Bush is being petitioned by CIA et al to pardon people who committed torture in pursuit of truth, justice & american way.

Re the closing puzzlement re Obama's support of the Afghan Surge, and remark that perhaps he may change his mind -- I've fallen off my ass on the way to Damascus. CIA director Hayden's speech of November 13 showed me the light. It now seems clear that both Obama and McCain had committed, some time ago, to a NATO ground war in northwest Pakistan early in the new presidency. See discussion here.
