Re the main piece’s capsulation of Lincoln’s thoughts and feelings about slavery — from his letter to old friend Joshua Speed of Aug 24, 1855:

I am not a Know-Nothing [a political persuasion and quasi-party of the day, akin to the KKK]; that is certain. How can anyone who abhors the oppression of Negroes be in favor of degrading classes of white people?

Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation we began by declaring that “all men are created equal.” We now practically read it “all men are created equal, except Negroes.” When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read, “all men are created equal, except Negroes and foreigners and Catholics.”

When it comes to this, I shall prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty — to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

It’s important that he reports that he had an emergency meeting with Rice in JULY 2001, telling her attacks were imminent and that action in Afghanistan was needed immediately to address them.

Rice, he says, passed the word DOWN the ladder, to “third-level” NSC staffers, instead of up to teh Prez.

The CIA then reacted to Rice’s lack of action with the famous President’s Daily Briefing — headlining Al Qaeda intent to attack in the US — on August 6.

Here are the two halves of the full Tenet 60 MINUTES interview from 2007, when his book was published. Part One Part Two Not an unsympathetic figure. I must read his book. Best guess based on his discussion re the Iraq war: Sayonim within CIA analysis, in sync (if not cahoots) with the likes of Perle and Wolfowitz, manufactured the Iraq WMD myth that their boss Tenet cannot in any way explain -- parallel to the myth-making within the Pentagon (eg Chelabi) by the Shulsky, Feith & co.

Re George Tenet’s “slam dunk” re Iraqi WMD, he spoke for the first time in public about this in 2007:

Insists that Woodward’s report of “slam dunk” (in PLAN OF ATTACK) is wildly exaggerated and that his comment had little or nothing to do with motivating Cheney & co into war.

Rather: White House threw that bone (ie threw Tenet) to Woodward postwar as PR damage control

Concludes by declaring himself “an honest man.”
